Mission Statement:

Minnesota Math Corps is an AmeriCorps program that is helping 4th - 8th graders become proficient in math. Math Corps tutors provide extra support to students who are not on track to be algebra-ready by 8th grade.

Program History:

Minnesota Math Corps will be starting its third program year in August 2010. It was piloted in St. Cloud and is now expanding to St. Paul and the east-central region of Minnesota. The program is based on research and implements evidenced-based methods to bring students up to grade level.

Additional Information:

Math Corps trains AmeriCorps members in research-based math instruction methods and places them in sites such as elementary and middle schools. In addition, members participate in AmeriCorps programming including engaging volunteers and personal and professional development training.

The Minnesota Math Corps AmeriCorps program is currently seeking Math Enrichment Tutors for the 2010-2011 program year, beginning in August. Serving for one year as a Math Corps “member” is a great way to build new career skills, new responsibility and a professional network. Math Enrichment Tutors will be intensively trained to work one-on-one with 4th-8th grade students who are not proficient in math. The tutor will use a prescribed mathematics intervention program and will conduct regular progress monitoring and assessments to ensure each student is on track toward proficiency in math. In addition tutors will participate in AmeriCorps programming including civic engagement and personal and professional development training. Current openings are in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

Benefits include hands-on experience, a modest living allowance, and optional health insurance. The living allowance for full-time members is $490 biweekly, and for part-time members it is $245. Upon successful completion of service, members receive an education award worth up to $5,350 that can be used towards federal student loans or to further your education. If eligible, you may also receive loan forbearance on outstanding federal student loans, payment of accrued interest and child care assistance.

Applicants must by 18 years of age or older, a U.S. citizen, national or lawful permanent resident, and have a high school diploma or equivalent. We strongly prefer a higher education degree and/or direct experience working with school-age children or mathematics.

Full time and part time positions are available. For more information or to apply, visit www.minnesotamathcorps.org or contact Justin Motherway at jmotherway@mnedc.org.
