Philosophy/Belief Statement:

Hospice is professional, end-of-life medical care delivered to patients suffering the advanced stages of serious illness.
Hospice care is for the patient whose illness no longer responds to curative treatment. In this case a palliative approach is more suitable. Therefore, the goal of hospice is to provide care with compassion, focusing on pain management and symptom control while providing comfort, dignity and quality of life.
Hospice evaluates the patient's physical condition, pain, support system and environment. Since each patient has unique needs, the hospice teams works with the family to develop a personalized care plan right in the patient's home, be it a private residence, assisted living apartment or nursing home.

Program History:

Hospice as we know it today began in 1967 England. It grew out of the mind and heart of a wonderful woman named Cicely Saunders. Born in 1918 a time when women were still in the background and in the home. Her life was filled with tenacity, enthusiasm, curiosity and education. She attended St. Anne’s College in Oxford England and completed her nurses training at the Nightingale School of Nursing in 1944. While in the field she wanted more and went back to school and became a Medical Social Worker in 1947 & then again to become a Physician in 1957. As a physician she worked with terminally ill patients and in trying to improve their care she wrote her first book Care of the Dying in 1960. In 1967 she founded St. Christopher’s Hospice in London. This became the model for hospice care internationally. She received numerous awards and honors during her life including becoming an Officer of the British Empire in 1965 and elevated to knighthood in 1967 to become Dame Cecily Saunders. She died in 2005 in the very hospice she founded at the age of 87. At her death there had been over 8,000 hospices established throughout the world.
