Philosophy/Belief Statement:

The Mazie Mentoring Program believes that all students have immense promise and that with the support of a mentor any student can fulfill their full potential.

Program History:

The Mazie Mentoring Program was founded in 1998 in honor of John Andrew Mazie who was tragically killed by a drunk driver at age 26. John was a mentor to many in his community, and so his parents, Barbara and Lowell Mazie, founded the Mazie Mentoring Program (formerly known as the John Andrew Mazie Memorial Foundation). They envisioned a world where all young people have access to a mentor and someone to motivate them to accomplish their goals. Today, the Mazie Mentoring Program matches volunteer mentors with high school sophomores who are looking for more support. We have programs in Framingham, Marlborough, and Waltham high schools and have served over 900 students.

Additional Information:

Whenever successful people look back, they cite those older adults who influenced their development, even though they knew each other for only a short time. For students facing adversity, finding mentors can be an essential part of their success. We are looking for volunteer mentors to support students at Framingham, Marlborough and Waltham High School!

Since 1998 over 900 Framingham and Waltham High School sophomores have been paired by the Foundation with mentors from the MetroWest community. Volunteer mentors are needed each year to start with sophomore students or to fill in for a student who's mentor has moved away. For more information and an application, please contact Foundation staff at or phone 508-450-7447.

The students are referred by school counselors based on their need for an adult guide in their lives. Mentors are asked to commit for 1 year and spend a minimum of 8 hours per month with their mentees. Activities done together focus on raising the student's self-esteem, encouraging them to focus more on their education and career options, and enabling them to take control over their lives. Mentees set goals around community service, their education and their career options. The Mazie Mentoring Program presents achievement awards which include lap top computers and scholarships for mentees.
