Objective:
To use original images to communicate  
New York State Learning Standards
Learning Standard #1: 
Students will create pictorial images from written words to express an idea or thought.
Activities:
Do Now: (5 Minutes)
Secretly write your name using any symbols other than letters and numbers. Teacher will collect and redistribute them to the class. The class will attempt to figure out who drew the symbols.
 
Teaching Input (5 Minutes)
Class discussion on how early visual language began with pictures. Explore the ideas that pictures might have been a method of record keeping, emotional and creative expression. 
Students view examples of early images used to communicate thoughts
 
Check For Understanding  (5 minutes)
Class discussion – based on the question: How do we know what symbols mean? Are there common references? Do we make them up?
 
Teacher Modeling (3 Minutes)
Teacher demonstrates the process of creating a visual image to represent a thought, idea or concept.  Using a simple sentence like – My favorite color is… Teacher creates a new symbol for each word. 
 
Guided Practice (20 Minutes)
Instruct students to write 3 sentences on loose leaf paper using English. They are to create a symbol in their sketch books for each word or letter without repeating a symbol that is already used.    
 
Materials
Sketchbooks
Loose Leaf Paper
Pencils      
Examples of:  Cave Drawings, Native American Pictographs, Aboriginal Drawings
 
Closure (2 minutes)
Students should decide on one symbol they created they feel represents a thought or idea thought might be used universally by other people. 
 
Assessment: 
Students should able to completely create pictorial communication that represents without using written words.
Independent Practice (Homework)
Use newly created symbols to participate in a Picton Online Survey.
