Notes/School Information:

Thomas Jefferson School attracts international attention for its academic quality and rigorous college preparatory program. A strongly encouraging learning atmosphere within a community of inquisitive and eager young people creates a unique learning combination. Students in grades 7 through 12 experience personal attention from faculty and positive support from peers in a coeducational, independent, boarding and day school. The school offers a challenging approach to learning, with the emphasis on the student's own efforts. Classes are short, and the teachers seldom lecture; instead, all students are called on to answer questions and generate discussion.

The academically intense, classical liberal-arts curriculum focuses on key college-prep areas. It is among the most challenging programs nationally. Short classes, all in the morning, center on discussion, debate, problem solving, not lecture. Students bear responsibility for serious daily assignments with much autonomy in the use of afternoon and evening time for academic work and activities. During afternoon and evening study time, the students have a good deal of freedom in choosing when and where to do their homework, with help readily available from faculty members.

Students take four main academic courses per year in grades 11 and 12 (five in grades 7 through 10); fine arts and athletic courses are taken every year. AP is the only level for upperclass English, calculus, sciences, and social studies; AP Physics, AP Comparative Government & Politics, and AP U.S. History are also offered.
