Mission Statement:

Montessori Community School (MCS) is a not-for-profit Montessori learning community of children, parents, faculty, and staff, each with distinct roles and responsibilities. Adults work in concert to support the healthy, holistic development of children as active, peaceful, life-long learners and global citizens.

School History:

Montessori Community School, a non-profit organization with a parent/staff governing board, was formed in 1980. At that time, a group of dedicated parents banded together to keep their children’s preschool, then the Montessori Children’s House of Chapel Hill, in operation when its proprietors decided to close. In the ensuing years, MCS has worked to maintain its core values as enrollment quadrupled, elementary and toddler programs were added, and new facilities were constructed. Today MCS enjoys an enrollment of approximately 250 students with 40 full- and part-time support staff, one toddler class, five primary children’s house classes, three lower elementary classes, two upper elementary classes, and an adolescent community. MCS has been at its current site since 1984 and is accredited by the American Montessori Society and was re-accredited in 2009-10. MCS is also accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), and the National Council for Private Schools.
