Description:

Historic Palmyra's 5 Mueums at 1 Destination is in the heart of Erie Canal country. Each of our museums are unique and have a little something for every age! Our Historical Museum boasts 23 themed rooms with over 200 years of Palmyra and vicinity history, featuring local businesses, police and fire service, medicine, education, toys and more. Our Erie Canal Depot is an 1830's tenant house that has stalls in the basement for the mules that pulled packet boats along the canal. You can see the original architecture of the building in each of the rooms. Place a pin in our map to mark your "home" as we have visitors from all over the world. The Palmyra Print Shop has examples of some of the finest printing equipment ever made. Thanks in part to John M. Jones who settled in Palmyra, changing the future of the printing industry. Last on Market St is our William Phelps General Store and family residence. Fondly known as the museum "where time stands still", this 1826 building has served the needs of Palmyra as a boarding house, bakery, tavern and general store. Purchased in 1868 by William Phelps, he immediately moved his family of 4 into the building and began renovating. Williams son Julius took over the store in 1900 and eventually closed it suddenly in 1940, leaving all the products on the shelves as a time capsule for you and your family to explore. Above the store is the family residence where Julius' daughter Sibyl lived until 1976. Never updated to have indoor plumbing or electricity, this home preserves its post Civil War furnishings and Victorian splendor. The haunting of the Phelps' 108 year legacy remains to this day.
Walk over to William St to visit our Alling Coverlet Museum and Gift Shop. This museum features the largest collection of American handwoven coverlets in the country. Coverlets are on display each year from May- Nov. We also have a large quilt room for the delight of our Quilters. Our Gift Shop offers American made woven goods, books for the history buff, puzzles, pillows and more.

A cool collection of mini-museums. Loved the store and home above it especially: a place locked in time.

Facility History:

The five museums of Historic Palmyra began during the Urban Renewal that covered our Nation from 1964 through 1976. Our incorporation with the NYS Department of State is dated 1967 and in 2005 we received an absolute charter from the New York State Board of Regents. However, Historic Palmyra has been around much longer, saving history in Palmyra, NY since 1843.
