One of our most rewarding functions at RLCB is the Development and Community Relations Department. Through the Department RLCB provides employees and consumers who are blind with programs and services designed to enhance personal and professional growth. Some of our programs include: EARS (Easy Access Reading Service): EARS is a personal reading service for individuals who are blind requesting help with printed materials. Volunteer readers assist consumers with reading literature, completing handwritten documents, organizing information and/or recording materials for greater independence. Eyes On Health/Wellness (EOH+): EOH+ is a resource vehicle to provide an array of program options to consumers. Quarterly events, designed to empower and promote social and economic equality, will offer information on topics ranging from physical health/wellness to self-advocacy. The purpose of EOH+ is to increase the knowledge of consumers and broaden the availability of community resources. RITE (Representatives In Training for Employees): The Representative in Training for Employees Program (RITE) is considered by RLCB to be an upward mobility vocational training program. The purpose is to build a diverse opportunity and work experience in a professional customer service based environment. Individuals begin by covering breaks in the reception area and become trained, knowledgeable, and reliable members of the support staff opening doors for future opportunities here or in the community. Technology Services: Uniquely designed to meet the needs of individuals who are blind or deaf-blind, RLCB’s technology program is a sought after community resource. Computer skills taught range from basic keyboarding to internet. The lab boasts the latest technology to accommodate a variety of adaptive needs. JAWS (Job Access With Speech) software, Magic, ZoomText screen magnification, Guide software, Open Book scanner software and the Braille Focus display are examples of the assistive technology available through RLCB’s Technology Services program.
