Frequently Asked Questions
You must be at least 18 years old to drive commercially within Nebraska (intrastate). You must be at least 21 years old to drive across state lines (interstate).
You must hold a valid, regular driver's license. Your driving record must meet state standards with no major violations.
You will receive a Manual Restriction on your license. This restricts you from operating any commercial vehicle with a clutch or shifter.
You must pass the General Knowledge Air Brake Written Test for your permit. You must also complete your skills testing in a vehicle equipped with air brakes.
Straight or single-unit trucks like dump trucks, concrete mixers, tankers, flatbeds, and delivery vehicles. Class B also covers passenger buses and school buses with the proper endorsements.
Tractor-trailer units equipped with a fifth wheel, such as semis, beverage trucks, or regional carrier fleets. When you are pulling something behind you that is more than 10,000 Ibs. This could also be a Straight Truck or Pick-Up truck pulling a trailer that is >10,000 Ibs. (Class A with an O Restriction) The O - 5th Wheel Restriction - meaning you cannot drive a semi truck with a trailer attached. This would be more like a tow hitch or pintle hook trailer.
📋 The 6-Step Licensing Process
Step 1: Study the Manual
Download the State CDL Manual. Only study the specific chapters corresponding to your desired CDL class and endorsements.
Step 2: Complete ELDT Theory
Complete your federally mandated ELDT Theory course online or in person with Midwest CDL Training to be signed off on the Federal Training Registry.
Step 3: Complete a DOT Physical
Obtain a medical card from a certified medical examiner. Skipping this places an in-state "K-Restriction" on your license.
Step 4: Pass the CLP (Commercial Learner Permit) Written Tests
Bring your legal documentations to the DMV (current drivers license, birth certificate, if married - marriage certificate, proof of address) and pass your written exams to secure your Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP).
Step 5: Complete Drug & Alcohol Screenings
Undergo your mandatory federal DOT drug and alcohol screening. Midwest CDL Training will execute your required queries in the FMCSA Clearinghouse after we set up your mandatory account with the FMCSA.
Step 6: Behind-the-Wheel Training & Skills Testing
Complete 1-on-1 behind-the-wheel instruction. After holding your permit for at least 14 days, pass your final skills test right here with our certified third-party examiners.
Obtain a new permit for your current class from the DMV. Practice in a manual vehicle (no new ELDT required) and pass a full vehicle inspection and road test using that manual vehicle.
Study the Class A manual sections, complete the Class A ELDT Theory course, pass the DMV written tests for a Class A permit, finish Class A Behind-the-Wheel training, and pass your Class A skills test.
