The Social Nature Movement faculty is a passionate team of experienced educators, guides, outdoor professionals, conservationists, and cultural storytellers dedicated to creating meaningful educational experiences throughout Aotearoa New Zealand. Our faculty brings learning to life beyond the classroom, combining hands-on adventure with environmental science, Māori culture, conservation, geography, ecology, and local history. Through carefully designed educational tours, students are encouraged to explore, question, connect, and develop a deeper understanding of New Zealand’s unique natural and cultural heritage. From forests and coastlines to geothermal landscapes and conservation sanctuaries, our faculty creates engaging, safe, and memorable learning experiences that connect curriculum with the real world.

The Social Nature Movement educational tour curriculum is designed to take learning beyond the classroom and into the landscapes, ecosystems, and cultural environments of Aotearoa New Zealand. Our programmes connect directly with key areas of the New Zealand Curriculum, including Science, Social Sciences, Geography, Environmental Education, Health and Physical Education, and Māori culture and history. Through immersive experiences, students learn by observing, exploring, asking questions, participating in practical activities, and engaging with local environments. Each tour is carefully structured to balance educational outcomes with adventure, ensuring students develop knowledge, critical thinking, environmental awareness, cultural understanding, teamwork, and a strong sense of connection to place. Social Nature Movement afterschool programmes provide students with meaningful opportunities to learn, explore, and connect with the natural world outside the traditional classroom. Led by our experienced faculty, programmes combine outdoor adventure, environmental education, practical skills, cultural learning, and teamwork in engaging, hands-on experiences. Students are encouraged to build confidence, independence, leadership, and resilience while developing a deeper understanding of Aotearoa New Zealand’s unique environments and cultural heritage. From bushcraft and outdoor survival to conservation, ecology, hiking, kayaking, astronomy, and Māori environmental knowledge, our programmes can be tailored to different age groups, interests, and school communities. By creating regular opportunities to get outside and learn through experience, Social Nature Movement aims to inspire curiosity, wellbeing, kaitiakitanga, and a lifelong connection with nature.

Admission to Social Nature Movement educational tours and programmes is open to students and school groups who are able to safely participate in the activities outlined for their chosen programme. Requirements may vary depending on the tour, age group, activity, and environmental conditions, but generally include:

• Age suitability: Students must meet the minimum age requirement for the selected programme.
• Safety and behaviour: Students are expected to follow instructions from Social Nature Movement faculty and school supervisors and demonstrate respectful behaviour towards others, the environment, wildlife, and cultural sites.
• Medical and accessibility information: Schools and guardians should advise Social Nature Movement of any relevant medical, mobility, dietary, accessibility, or learning requirements before the programme so appropriate planning can take place.
• Supervision: School groups must provide the required number of teachers or accompanying adults where applicable. Social Nature Movement faculty provide activity leadership, education, safety management, and interpretation but do not necessarily replace school supervision responsibilities.
• Consent: Where required, students must have appropriate parental/guardian consent and schools must complete the necessary booking and participant information before attendance.
• Environmental readiness: Participation may be subject to weather, water, track, or environmental conditions. Social Nature Movement reserves the right to modify activities where necessary to maintain participant safety.

Our philosophy is that admission should not simply be about whether a student can complete an activity, but whether we can create the right conditions for them to participate safely, confidently, and meaningfully. Where additional support or adaptations are required, we encourage schools to discuss these with our faculty during the planning stage.

Social Nature Movement operates on a rolling admissions and booking basis, allowing schools and educational groups to enquire and secure programmes throughout the year. To ensure sufficient time for programme planning, faculty allocation, transport, equipment, risk management, and any curriculum customisation, we recommend that schools book at least 4–6 weeks in advance.

For larger school groups, multi-day educational programmes, residential experiences, or customised curriculum programmes, 8–12 weeks’ notice is recommended. This allows our faculty to work closely with teachers to develop learning outcomes, itineraries, activities, and logistical requirements specific to the group.

Late bookings may be accommodated where availability permits, but confirmation is subject to faculty, transport, equipment, venue, and activity availability. Certain activities may also have seasonal or weather-dependent requirements.

As our work has grown, so too has our commitment to education, recognising the powerful role that outdoor experiences can play in developing knowledge, confidence, environmental awareness, cultural understanding, and a sense of kaitiakitanga.

Our educational programmes have evolved from our experience delivering guided outdoor adventures, conservation experiences, Māori cultural interpretation, and nature-based activities across the North Island. Working with students, schools, educators, and community groups has allowed us to develop programmes that bring learning outside the traditional classroom and into the environments students are studying.

Today, Social Nature Movement’s educational offering brings together our experienced faculty of guides, educators, outdoor professionals, and environmental practitioners. Our programmes are designed to complement classroom learning through practical, place-based experiences, giving students the opportunity to explore New Zealand’s forests, coastlines, waterways, volcanic landscapes, wildlife sanctuaries, and cultural heritage sites.

Our approach continues to evolve alongside the needs of schools and students. We aim to build long-term relationships with educational communities and provide experiences that are not simply excursions, but meaningful learning opportunities that inspire curiosity, respect for the environment, cultural understanding, and lifelong connections with nature.

Our team, or faculty, brings together people with diverse skills and backgrounds, creating opportunities to work in both practical outdoor roles and educational and operational positions.

Employment opportunities may include Outdoor Education Guides, Nature and Environmental Educators, Adventure Guides, Māori Cultural Interpretation Guides, Conservation Educators, Kayak and Water-Based Activity Guides, Stargazing and Astronomy Guides, School Programme Facilitators, and Senior or Lead Guides. We also offer opportunities in tour operations, programme development, customer experience, marketing, administration, and educational programme coordination.

For those beginning their outdoor careers, Social Nature Movement can provide pathways to develop practical skills, guiding experience, leadership capability, environmental knowledge, and interpretive skills. Experienced guides and educators may progress into senior positions, mentoring roles, programme development, training, and specialist faculty positions.

We particularly value people who demonstrate manaakitanga, kaitiakitanga, professionalism, curiosity, environmental responsibility, cultural respect, teamwork, and a genuine desire to inspire others through learning and adventure.
