Northwestern NEXT is a two-year comprehensive transition program located on the residential campus of Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa. Students with intellectual or developmental disabilities experience college life alongside traditional college students while receiving individualized instruction and support. Students live in residence halls, participate in campus activities, take specialized NEXT classes, and have opportunities to audit approved Northwestern College courses.

NEXT students live in Northwestern College residence halls and have a specially selected roommate/peer mentor. Students participate in the same residential community as traditional college students.

Diversity

NEXT students are part of a diverse Christian college community representing multiple states, countries, cultures and Christian denominations. Northwestern College reports students from 31 states and 31 countries.

For 2026–27, NEXT program fees are $11,972, including fees to audit approved college courses. Housing and food range from $10,900–$12,100, with a $320 technology fee. Total estimated out-of-pocket cost is $23,192–$24,392, before applicable financial aid and additional fees.

Because Northwestern NEXT is a federally recognized Comprehensive Transition Program (CTP), eligible students may complete the FAFSA and may qualify for federal financial aid, including the Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant and federally funded work-study.

NEXT is specifically designed for students with intellectual or developmental disabilities. The program provides individualized instruction, transition support, life-skills education, career preparation and opportunities for increased independence.

NEXT students can participate in Northwestern College's campus activities, social events, student organizations, intramurals, worship opportunities, music, theatre and other aspects of campus life.

Students have opportunities to attend and participate in the broader Northwestern College athletic community, including NAIA and Great Plains Athletic Conference activities. Individual participation depends on the activity and applicable requirements.

Northwestern College has a long history of athletic competition through the NAIA and Great Plains Athletic Conference. NEXT students are part of the broader campus community and have opportunities to attend athletic events.

NEXT students do not pursue traditional bachelor's degrees or majors. Instead, students follow an individualized program focused on academic skills, independent living, health and wellness, social competence, relationships and career readiness. Students may audit up to 9 credits per semester of approved Northwestern College courses.

Students have access to Northwestern College's campus technology resources and technology-supported learning environments. A technology fee is included in NEXT program costs.

Applicants must generally be 18–24 years old, have a documented intellectual or developmental disability, have completed high school or its equivalent, demonstrate basic reading, writing, math and communication skills, manage basic personal needs, follow rules and demonstrate a desire to attend college and develop greater independence.
