Our tuition rates are lower than the national average, and combined with our abundant real-world learning opportunities, Southeast is a smart investment in any student’s future. At Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO), undergraduate domestic students pay a nationwide tuition rate of $305 per credit hour plus a $47 general fee, totaling $352 per credit hour. A typical 30-credit-hour academic year costs about $10,560 in tuition and general fees, before housing and meals.

At SEMO, we're serious about making education affordable and within reach, and we don't compromise on quality. With low tuition and abundant real-world learning opportunities, scholarships that recognize merit and need, and a network of support standing by you, a respected degree is within arm's reach. Nearly 96% of students receive some form of financial aid. Roughly 70% of our student population qualifies for scholarships, with over $20 million in scholarships awarded annually by the university. Additionally, approximately 40% of undergraduates receive federal Pell Grants.

The requirements for admission vary depending on how you plan to enter Southeast. We’ll need to take into consideration where you’re coming from, how much prior education you’ve completed, and what type of degree or program you may want to earn.

Both past academic performance and the demonstration of academic promise are taken into consideration for admission to SEMO. Decisions are made without regard to race, color, creed, gender, disability or national origin.

In general, here’s everything you need to know about applying to college at Southeast.

Admission to the Mass Communication program (including Advertising & Public Relations, Media Management,  Journalism & Video Production, and Film production) at Southeast Missouri State University requires you to complete a Declaration of Major form and meet three primary requirements:

  1. Complete a minimum of 15 semester hours at SEMO or a transferred, accredited college.
    • Attain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Complete EN 100 or EN 140 with a minimum grade of “C”

Students are generally evaluated for formal entry into the program after their second semester, and you can begin this process via the SEMO Department of Mass Media. [

SEMO operates on a rolling admission basis with a final application deadline of August 1 for the Fall semester and December 1 for the Spring semester. Apply by December 1 to be eligible for free tuition giveaways and ensure maximum consideration. Tier 1 priority for housing preferences closes December 1, and Tier 2 is March 1
