Barnstable Academy is a college prep school that provides academic excellence in a warm and supportive environment designed to help students thrive.
At Barnstable Academy, we care deeply about the growth of our students. We build relationships and are genuinely invested in bolstering each student to achieve his or her personal best. Our teachers are passionate and engaging educators who want to see each of our students succeed.
Barnstable Academy was founded in 1978 to provide an education which builds self-esteem and is academically rich and strong. At the same time, the curriculum is creative, enlivening and stimulating for young people seeking higher levels of achievement.
The philosophy of Barnstable stems from an in-depth study of students who have been dissatisfied with their previous schools. They often feel that the “system” is too large and impersonal. Because they are unique individuals, they need an educational program designed for multi-faceted and diverse human beings – not for the masses within the “lowest common denominator.”
We at Barnstable Academy believe that students can and will carry more of a responsibility when given the right opportunities at the right times. We have created an environment which invites and encourages young people to participate actively and responsibly in their own education.
In March of 2007, Barnstable Academy partnered with the American Education Group (AEG) of Grand Rapids, Michigan. AEG, now Fusion Education Group believes the future of education is all about customization, personalization, and specialization. Visit www.fusionacademy.com.
Barnstable Academy offers unique academic opportunities and programs for gifted students. In addition to the array of honors and AP high school courses offered, students can also earn an Endorsement in a specific content area of their focus. For students on an accelerated track, Barnstable’s Edge program allows for creative scheduling opportunities to allow the student to move at an accelerated rate through content material and far exceed grade level. Barnstable’s Middle School Enrichment and High School Enrichment classes provide another opportunity to expand a student’s learning experience.
Barnstable Academy supports students with ADD and ADHD by capitalizing on our small class sizes, relational components of our program as well as a focus on executive functioning. Our teachers gauge student interest and use individual interests to engage our students and redirect as needed.
In middle school, our students use a comprehensive color-coded academic system for all academic classes to help ingrain key organizational and management skills and attend a weekly executive functioning workshop. In high school, we offer executive functioning workshops to our students to bolster key skills, such as organization, prioritization, planning, and time management to name a few. Additionally, students who struggle with their executive functioning skills often take an EDGE class where they can spend time 1:1 working on implementing key executive functioning skills into their assignments and homework.
Students who struggle with anxiety often benefit from the inherent nature of Barnstable Academy's smaller school, supportive teachers and accessibility to our school social worker and school counselor. Students can utilize basic exposure strategies within our school environment. Our support staff is happy to collaborate with outside professionals to bolster the success of our students in school. The communication between our support staff and teachers as well as the creative approach towards helping our students strengthens the success of students who may have avoided components of school in the past.
