Installation of Commercial Doors and Hardware.
- Material Considerations & Standards. Beyond structural types, commercial doors are defined by their materials:
Aluminum: Highly corrosion-resistant and lightweight, commonly used for retail facades.
Fiberglass: Ideal for harsh environments or locations prone to moisture and chemicals.
Wood: Used for interior applications in hotels or executive offices where a premium, traditional aesthetic is required. - Steel: Durable.
- HMD - Hollow Metal Doors - the industry standard for security and durability. Made from steel sheets over an insulated core, they are highly resistant to forced entry, weather, and heavy daily use.
- Best for: Exterior entrances, stairwells, and utility or stock rooms.
- Specialized variations: Include Temperature Rise Doors to slow heat transfer during a fire, and lead-lined doors for healthcare or aerospace facilities
- Storefront Doors - Storefront doors combine extruded aluminum framing with large tempered or insulated glass panes. They prioritize aesthetics, visibility, and natural light.
Best for: Retail shops, corporate offices, restaurants, and auto showrooms.
- Automatic Sliding Doors - Convenient for high traffic areas, providing easy access for customers and visitors.
Best for: malls, supermarkets, and hospitals.
- Steel doors - Offer high levels of security, galvanized steel doors are durable and resistant to forced entry and vandalism. They’re extremely secure, fire-resistant, and durable. And, if business owners don’t want just a dull slab of steel, they can choose an option with a tempered glass insert for natural light.
Best for: Banks, government buildings, and high-security facilities.
- Wood Doors - Less common in commercial settings, wood doors can add a touch of warmth and elegance. In most commercial situations, wood doors are not allowed to be hollow core (thin wood veneer sheets over lightweight support), and must be either a solid wood or a composite material. Wood doors are available in different finishes and designs to match your aesthetic.
Best for: Restaurants, boutique shops, and upscale projects.
- Fire & Smoke Doors - Critical life-safety assemblies designed to compartmentalize buildings, slow the spread of flames, and block toxic smoke. They feature specific fire-resistance ratings (20 to 180 minutes) and specialized gasketing to limit air infiltration during an emergency.
Key Distinctions
- Fire Doors: Engineered to prevent the spread of fire. They carry an official label (often on the hinge side of the door) and feature structural integrity to resist burn-through. Common ratings include 20, 45, 90, and 180 minutes.
- Smoke Doors: Designed specifically to impede the spread of toxic gases and smoke. They usually require an "S" label (indicating compliance with UL 1784 air-leakage tests) and are often mandatory in corridors and smoke barriers.
- Impact Doors - Designed to withstand heavy traffic and take a beating from impacts such as "a cart or rolling object" striking the doors. Impact doors are durable, easy to clean, and resistant to scratches and dents.
- Best for: Restaurants, supermarkets, and industrial kitchens.
- Fiberglass Doors - Designed to increase energy efficiency when containing insulation inside their shell, improve aesthetic while requiring minimal care.
Best for: Commercial Settings where they are concerned about energy efficiency, constant moisture, and the storage of corrosive materials.
- Aluminum Doors - Resist rust and corrosion while meeting most fire codes and durability needs. They are thin and light weight, while being robust.
Best for: Commercial Spaces concerned about rust & corrosion from moisture.
- Vinyl Doors - Cost-effective, energy-efficient, affordable, and design friendly.
Best for: areas where Code compliance is not an issue, or where the Authority Having Jurisdiction has approved them.
- Interior Doors - Doors that are "inside" the building and have "specialized" needs. Some of these are already noted above - such as Fire & Smoke Doors; but also include Sound Transmission Control doors, Traffic Doors, and many other options.

I want to start by thanking you for taking the time to consider us for future opportunities you may have. We understand that you have many options and welcome the opportunity to work directly with you on your Door Installation project.
We’d also like to follow up with a brief introduction to AB Finishes; who we are; and what we do:
AB Finishes was first conceptualized in January of 2022 when a door supplier sought out a Restoration Contractor, for a niche “finish carpentry” installation need. That restoration GC did not have the time, bandwidth, or necessary overhead budget to manage these niche projects profitably and declined the project.
But that GC's COO Brandy Painter saw the potential in this new niche market and reached out to the Vendor’s Account Manager to pitch “hiring her and her new company” for their door & trim installation project.
AB Finishes was founded February 15th, 2022.
- They accepted their first project with UDH by the end of the month.
- Since the initial approach, AB Finishes has been asked to provide bids on over 100 projects; completed 13 projects; are under way on four projects; are onboarding and waiting for kick off of two projects slated to start later in the year, and looking for our next project in 2026!
What we do: AB Finishes is a full-service General Contractor.
We have the capability and resources necessary to handle any trade we are asked to provide a bid on but consider ourselves “finish carpentry” specialists. Our experience since concept has primarily included Interior Door installation in multi-family residential (5 floors or less), multi- family residential high rises (34 floors +), college campus buildings that include dormitory spaces & classrooms; and office finished and white box spaces.
AB Finishes is receiving positive feedback and building good working relationships with the site teams on our projects. We have truly enjoyed working with the various foremen, project engineers, and other various site management team members on the past 8 projects. We truly strive to stay hands on and “plugged in” to our projects, and the site teams have been appreciative of our hands-on approach. We pride ourselves on our “personal touch,” and want to note that when you choose to work with us, you really do work with “us”. We will be with you, in the trenches, from bidding to final invoice.- In 2023 Brandy Painter brought on a consultant to provide insight into the “details” of the first project that AB Finishes was awarded. That consultant was integral in digging into the project's plans with a scale, measuring trim and crown; asking questions about “call outs” that weren’t in the AB Finishes bid; and essentially confirming that AB Finishes truly understood the scope of work that we had taken on.
- Since that first project AB Finishes has been focused on guiding the installation efforts, liaising with the project superintendents and foremen at our current project locations, while bidding on opportunities that will help us, as a new company, to grow.
In September of 2024, the owner brought her consultant on as a partner. We now are looking forward to continuing to grow AB Finishes one crazy, amazing, frustrating, stressful, yet fulfilling project at a time.
Things to look forward to in 2026 & beyond:
The owners are taking what they have learned over the past 4 years and continuing to evolve their "process". Constantly working to work smarter and not harder; and searching for ways to better the process. Focused on keeping our company not only Woman Owned, but also “Woman Managed”, and maintaining the headway that we have thus far managed in a primarily male occupied industry.
Specific Goals:
• Continuing to provide “Hands On” services.
• Continuing to provide detailed project timelines that are updated continuously with project photos. This documentation is HUGE in our efforts to protect not only our investment in installation time, but also in protecting our hiring contractor’s investment in materials.
• Continuing to hire quality crew members with an eye for detail.
• Fostering workplace safety through training and due diligence.
o I am personally on a mission to learn as much as I can about the hardware that I am responsible for. I have completed a course on Panic Hardware & Exit Devices; Electrified Panic Hardware and Exit Devices; Closers; Auto Operators; and Preparing Your Facility for Fire Door Inspections.
o I joined DHI in July on the recommendation of an Allegion representative and am working to increase our marketability by adding Fire Door Recertifications to our resume. This is a 2026/2027 long term goal, but I will be attending my first in person course in September and have two online and cued to start!
• Fostering workplace safety through training, certifications, providing quality PPE, and practicing daily safety diligence.
We recently partnered with:
• CompanyCam to manage our site documentation.
• SmartSheets to manage the Hardware Schedule and Installation process as well as the daily safety paperwork. The days of loose pieces of paper, running out of copies of the JHA on the job site, not having a ToolBox Talk handy, etc. are over!
• JJ Keller & Associates to manage our safety trainings.

AB Finishes: History in the making…
AB Finishes was first conceptualized in January of 2022 when a new vendor, Unified Door & Hardware Group sought out Classic Construction & Restoration, Inc. for a niche “finish carpentry” installation need. Classic did not have the time, bandwidth, or necessary overhead budget to manage these niche projects profitably and declined the project. But Classic’s COO Brandy Painter saw the potential in this new niche market and reached out to the Vendor’s Account Manager to pitch “hiring her and her new company” for their door & trim installation project. AB Finishes was founded February 15th, 2022 and had accepted their first project with UDH by the end of the month.
Since the initial approach by UDH, AB Finishes has been asked to provide over 30 bids and been recommended by our founding vendor partner to a number of his counterparts at both UDH and its various sister companies. We have completed four projects, are under way on three projects, and are contracted for an additional three projects slated to start later in the year.
What we do: AB Finishes is a full-service General Contractor. We have the capability and resources necessary to handle any trade we are asked to provide a bid on but consider ourselves “finish carpentry” specialists. We have primarily been asked to bid “trim carpentry” but were recently asked to provide a quote to be the “Punch Contractor” who finishes the various trades’ incomplete punch list items. We’ve worked in Commercial Office spaces, Multi-family residential (5 floors or less) spaces, Townhomes, & multi-family residential high rises.
AB Finishes is receiving good reviews from Site Management due to our hands-on approach to project management. Our approach is to always make the customers feel that we are there for them in all stages of the project by providing a caring Project Manager who will be with the project from start to completion. This personal touch is what we are marketing for and what we believe has made our current and previous projects successful.
AB Finishes is currently working to perfect our “management style” by having a female contracted consultant on site who is providing support, guiding the installation efforts, and liaising with the project superintendents and foremen at their current project locations. AB Finishes is very excited to be making this move into what is a primarily male driven landscape.
Things to look forward to in 2025: Brandy Painter and her consulting team are working diligently towards building a future in the finish carpentry niche market as a Woman Owned & Managed Business by:

- Continuing to hire & partner with quality crews that have a similar work ethic and eye for detail.
